Learning Japanese has been an aspiration of mine for a long time. Japanese and Japan, linguistically, culturally, historically and politically fascinate me. There are so many things about Japan that are unique.

I would love to spend a summer or semester in Japan, and studying the language gives me that opportunity.

Coming from a high school that did not offer any East Asian languages, it was not possible for me to pursue this aspiration in an organized fashion until now. I've known that I planned to study Japanese in college, so I prepared before beginning classes: I taught myself the kana and some basic grammatical structures. Because of this, I haven't found things too difficult so far. I suspect that as the semester progresses I will have to work harder and harder to keep up. I'm looking forward to the challenge.

Until next time,
Zach Weiss
